Casey Paul Schukow, DO, is a recent graduate (‘22) of Michigan State University College of
Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM). Before beginning medical school, he played football as a
defensive lineman at Hillsdale College (Hillsdale, MI), where he earned his BS in Biochemistry
(‘17). During his transition from undergrad to medical school, he worked as a lab assistant at the
University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center where he studied tumor microenvironment
characterization of colorectal cancer via multiplex immunohistochemistry staining and protein
involvement in pancreatic cancer. While in medical school, Casey made the most of his
opportunities making friends, volunteering, engaging in research, holding various leadership
positions, writing for VisualDx, and working as a professional tutor for USMLE Pro. Through his
efforts at MSUCOM, he was awarded the American Osteopathic Foundation’s Edward& Joanne
Loniewski Merit Scholarship. While finding his “path to path”, he began serving as the Education
& Research Outreach coordinator for the Michigan State University CHM-COM Pathology
Interest Group (@CPathig), which was co-established by Meredith Herman
(@MeredithKHerman) during the COVID-19 pandemic. In his current role, Casey is researching
how limited formal pathology education in medical school curricula impacts students’
perceptions of pathology, and is passionate about finding ways to help improve pathology
education and exposure to medical students (e.g., boards review sessions, Twitter,
PathElective, etc.)
