Gram Positive Cocci

GPC-gal.jpeg

This week’s #micromeded needs no explanation. This jam-packed infographic contains many of the gram positive cocci bacteria that cause disease in humans. The flowchart depicts one possible mechanism for differentiating between these organisms, but nowadays, many of these orgs are identified using MALDI-TOF, PCR, WGS, and/or immunologic detection. Nevertheless, it is important for clinicians and microbiologists to know how these tests are performed and each org’s characteristics. This is important not only for boards, but it also helps you better understand the pathogenicity of each of these species and how to identify them if the advanced technologies mentioned above were not available.
