Course Description

Neuropathology encompasses a broad range of fields, including surgical neuropathology, autopsy brain, neurodegenerative, muscle pathology, and eye pathology. Surgical neuropathology is increasingly dependent on an “integrated” diagnosis, which combines clinical features, histologic and immunohistochemical features, and molecular features to arrive at a diagnosis that best reflects all the facets of a tumor a patient presents with. As such training in neuropathology is well-rounded in teaching how to assess and incorporate all these features. This course will cover major topics in surgical neuropathology, neurodegenerative neuropathology, muscle pathology, and eye pathology.

If interested in neuropathology, one must complete an ACGME-accredited residency in anatomic pathology, followed by a neuropathology ACGME fellowship, which is two years. If you know you want to pursue neuropathology before beginning residency, you can apply to a combined AP/NP training program, which combines two years of anatomic pathology residency with two years of neuropathology fellowship and also lead to board certification.
